What is your Favorite Ambassadors Memory?

There are just too many! But the conferences at The Ohio State and UT Chattanooga definitely top the list! We did quite the rendition of the We Are the World one year to win the talent competition.

How has Ambassadors benefitted you post-graduation?

The value of storytelling. Storytelling is a buzz word in marketing now, but as Ambassadors that is what we did all the time – we told stories to convince students and parents to choose Appalachian. This is even more important now than it was 20 years ago pre-Internet! In my current role, we often talk about what value our stores and counters offer when people can buy products online faster and simpler. However, it is the human connection that often matters – someone taking the time to listen to your concerns, answer your questions and provide advice – one human caring about another. A website can give you information and grab your interest, but the ability to connect with someone else will help you make that final choice. I first learned the value of this interaction and connection when giving campus tours and meeting with prospective students. And, of course, I learned to appreciate giving back to institutions and causes that I truly believe in.

What would you say to a student considering applying to be an Ambassador?

If you love Appalachian and are truly gaining from your experience, then pay it back to the University and pay it forward to a prospective student – you will love every minute of the opportunity to represent your school!
