Keeping the High Country Warm

It is no secret that the winter months in Boone are cold. So, when being outside, it's important to be dressed appropriately. Through this basic fact, and to raise awareness of the homeless population in Boone, The Nearly Naked Mile event was established.

Logan DiFranco described the event as an  "opportunity to further understand the needs of the Boone community, and give some support in fulfilling those needs. Not only is this event educational, but it is also a ton of fun that attracts the attention of many bringing awareness to the need for proper winter clothing."

During the 1 mile run around campus, runners are encouraged to "bare" it all - down to bathing suit coverage. As a registration fee to participate, runners donate a coat or two other articles of clothing and all items are donated to the Hospitality House.

"I am so proud of the 4th Annual Nearly Naked Mile. The event is proof that the Appalachian family truly cares about the surrounding community. I think the possibilities for Nearly Naked Mile are endless. I am excited to watch the event continue to grow when I come back for Homecoming!" - Maggie King, Nearly Naked Mile Coordinator

This year, we are happy to announce a record number of participants: 210 runners, with 545+ items of clothing sent to the Hospitality House!
